Pre-Winter Workshop Checks for Farms and Contractors

Pre-Winter Workshop Checks for Farms and Contractors

The first cold morning has a habit of finding the one thing you meant to fix in September. A battery gives up, a work light flickers, or the compressor refuses to start just as the day gets busy.

A couple of hours in the workshop now can save a lot of standing around later. Here are the checks worth doing before winter settles in.

Start with the equipment you rely on most

Think about what would bring work to a halt if it failed tomorrow. For many farms and contractors, that means the compressor, battery charger, pressure washer, welder and the tools used for everyday repairs.

Run each item and check it properly. Listen for unusual noises, inspect cables and hoses, and look for leaks or loose connections. If something has been playing up for months, put it on the repair list now. Cold weather rarely makes a temperamental tool more cooperative.

Check any manufacturer guidance before servicing equipment, and isolate it from power before working on it.

Give batteries and electrics some attention

Winter puts batteries under more strain. Check the condition of vehicle and machinery batteries, clean corroded terminals where appropriate, and make sure chargers and jump packs work. A jump pack that has been sitting flat on a shelf since spring offers little comfort at 6am.

Look over extension leads, plugs and sockets too. Damaged insulation, cracked casings and loose connections need attention before damp conditions make them more troublesome. Check that workshop lighting covers the areas where you actually work, including outside the doors. It is much easier to spot a leaking hose when you can see it.

Inspect hoses, fittings and air lines

Air and hydraulic systems deserve a close look before temperatures drop. Check hoses for cracks, rubbing and leaks. Inspect couplings and fittings, and deal with any that have started to weep or come loose.

Drain the compressor tank in line with its instructions and check the condition of filters and air lines. Water in the system can cause problems at any time of year, but freezing weather makes it harder to ignore.

Keep spare fittings, clips and commonly used hose sizes to hand if they regularly feature in your repairs. A small, well-chosen stock beats losing half a day over a minor part.

Sort the workshop before the rush

A winter check is a good excuse to clear the benches and find out what you actually have. Test torches and inspection lamps. Check sockets, spanners, drill bits and cutting discs for damage or wear. Replace the items that always seem to disappear halfway through a job.

Then look at the consumables. Are you stocked up on gloves, absorbents, lubricants, fasteners and cleaning supplies? The aim is to have enough of the things you use regularly without filling every shelf with items you bought three years ago and still have not opened.

At Multimax Direct, we supply tools and workshop essentials to help farms keep repairs moving. If your kit needs topping up, it is worth doing while you have time to choose what you need.

Check the space around the tools

Good equipment still needs a safe place to use it. Clear access to exits, tidy trailing leads, and make sure the floor is free from oil, clutter and anything else likely to cause a slip.

Check your heating and ventilation arrangements before you need them every day. Keep flammable materials away from heaters, and never run an engine or fuel-powered equipment inside without suitable ventilation. Make sure fire extinguishers and first aid supplies are accessible and in date.

Outside, look at the area where vehicles and machinery come in for repairs. Mud, standing water and poor lighting can turn a routine job into a slow and awkward one.

Make a short repair list and act on it

You do not need a complicated inspection form. Walk through the workshop with a notebook and split what you find into three groups: fix now, order parts, and monitor.

Start with anything that affects safety or stops work. Then tackle the small faults that have become part of the daily routine. That sticking drawer or unreliable lamp may seem harmless until you need it during a late repair in the rain.

Winter will bring enough surprises of its own. Your workshop does not need to supply any more.
